The review

Voor je Buurt is a Dutch donation crowdfunding platform dedicated to social and green neighbourhood initiatives. It began in 2012 as a pilot project of the think tank Kennisland and has operated as the independent Stichting Voor je Buurt since 2015, building a network of nationally and locally branded crowdfunding portals across the Netherlands.

As a not-for-profit foundation without structural subsidies, it has worked with technology partner GoodUp since 2017 to run its platforms. Successful campaigns pay out the amount raised minus a single 5% service fee, which already covers the payment provider's transaction costs, so there is no separate processing charge on top. The funding model is all-or-nothing: contributions are paid out only when a campaign reaches its target.

The platform is well suited to community groups, volunteers, and local organisations raising money for civic, social, or green projects, particularly those that can combine public donations with matchfunding. Its main trade-offs are scope and reach: it is available only in Dutch, operates within the Netherlands, and concentrates on neighbourhood causes rather than personal or commercial fundraising.

A defining feature is matchfunding, in which funds and public bodies such as VSBfonds, RegioBank, provinces, and municipalities top up what a campaign raises from the public. Crowdfunding payments are processed through Stripe, and personal data is kept within the European Economic Area.

The verdict, in two columns

What’s good, what’s not.

What’s good
  • Specialises in civic, social, and green neighbourhood projects across the Netherlands.
  • A single 5% service fee on payout that already covers the payment provider's transaction costs.
  • Matchfunding partnerships with funds and local governments (VSBfonds, RegioBank, provinces, and municipalities) can multiply what a campaign raises.
  • Long operating track record, with thousands of completed campaigns and a high reported success rate.
  • Personal data kept within the European Economic Area (EEA).
  • Operates a network of nationally and locally branded crowdfunding portals.
What’s not
  • All-or-nothing funding: if a campaign raises less than its target, contributions are not paid out.
  • Focused on the Netherlands and available only in Dutch, limiting cross-border use.
  • Narrow scope around neighbourhood and community causes rather than general or personal fundraising.
  • Reliant on third-party matchfunding partners, whose availability varies by region and programme.

Voor je Buurt uses an all-or-nothing funding model: funds are only paid out when at least 100% of the target is reached. On a successful campaign a 5% service fee is deducted from the amount raised; this single fee already covers the payment service provider's transaction costs, the payment-method/bank costs, administration and support (no separate processing fee on top). The terms do not state whether the 5% is inclusive or exclusive of Dutch VAT (21%).
