FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is donation crowdfunding?

Donation crowdfunding lets individuals, nonprofits, or causes raise money from many small donors online, usually without offering anything in return. It is distinct from reward-based, equity, and lending crowdfunding.

How do these platforms make money if their platform fee is 0%?

Platforms with a 0% platform fee typically use a tip-based model: at checkout, donors are prompted to leave a voluntary tip to support the platform. Payment processing fees are charged separately, at cost by the underlying payment provider.

Why does data residency matter?

Under GDPR, European nonprofits managing donor data must know where that data is stored and processed. EEA data residency means donor information stays inside the EU/EEA legal framework, which simplifies compliance for European organizations.

Are the ratings on this site sponsored?

No. We do not accept payment from any platform in exchange for inclusion or placement. The site is owned by WhyDonate B.V., one of the platforms we cover — read our methodology page for how we mitigate that conflict.
