The review

Kadonation is a Belgian platform launched in 2016 and based in Gent, operated by Kadonation NV. Its primary product is online group gifts, where friends, family, or colleagues pool money toward a present, with cause-based donation crowdfunding offered as a secondary path under the same flow. The company expanded across the Benelux, opening a Dutch office in Alkmaar in 2021, and later added a corporate-gifting product, Kadonation Select.

Creating and contributing to a group gift carries no charge beyond the contribution itself, and the full collected amount is converted into a Kadonation gift card redeemable with partner retailers; the card cannot be cashed out and is valid for three years. Recipients can instead choose to donate part or all of the balance to nonprofits, in which case the donated amount is transferred in full. For the donation-crowdfunding path, Kadonation applies a one-time deduction when a project closes, with nothing charged to start a campaign and no per-contribution percentage.

Kadonation's strength is its Benelux payment coverage and a polished group-gifting experience, integrated even into the Payconiq by Bancontact app. The principal trade-off flows from the gift-card model: for group gifts, collected money is locked into store credit rather than paid out as cash, and the card expires after three years. For social group-gift collections among Benelux users this is the intended design; organisers raising money for a cause that needs a cash payout should use the dedicated crowdfunding path or a cash-settling platform instead.

On payments, Kadonation supports Bancontact, iDEAL, Payconiq, Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro, covering the main Belgian and Dutch rails. It states it acts in accordance with the GDPR, Belgian privacy law, and Dutch implementing legislation, with security inspired by ISO 27001 and daily backups; it does not, however, state the country in which data is physically stored.

The verdict, in two columns

What’s good, what’s not.

What’s good
  • Group gifts cost nothing to create or contribute to beyond the contribution itself.
  • Broad Benelux payment coverage: Bancontact, iDEAL, Payconiq, Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro.
  • Donation-crowdfunding path charges only a one-time deduction at project close, with no start or per-contribution cost.
  • Integrated into the Payconiq by Bancontact app for quick, secure contributions.
  • Recipients can donate part or all of a collection to nonprofits, transferred in full.
  • States compliance with GDPR plus Belgian and Dutch privacy law, with ISO 27001-inspired security.
What’s not
  • Group-gift funds convert to a gift card and cannot be cashed out.
  • The Kadonation gift card expires three years after issue.
  • Group gifting, not cause crowdfunding, is the primary product; donation crowdfunding is secondary.
  • Does not state the country where donor data is physically stored.
