The review
Charitable Impact is a Canadian public foundation founded in 2011 in Vancouver by John Bromley. Rather than a conventional crowdfunding site, it operates as a donor-advised fund: donors add money to an account it calls the Impact Account and then recommend gifts over time to the registered Canadian charities they want to support.
The platform is run through CHIMP: Charitable Impact Foundation (Canada), a registered charity classified by the Canada Revenue Agency and designated as a public foundation under the Income Tax Act (registration 845528827RR0001), with associated operating companies CHIMP Technology Inc. and CHIMP Services Inc. Donors receive a tax receipt for the full amount they add to their account and can fund it with cash, securities, real estate, or cryptocurrency, while different deposit methods - credit card, cheque, pre-authorized debit, or securities - carry different processing arrangements.
The donor-advised structure is Charitable Impact's defining feature: it suits people who give regularly or to many causes and want to separate setting money aside from deciding where it goes, with tools for recurring deposits, giving goals, and anonymous gifts. The trade-off is that it is built around the Canadian charitable system - gifts flow to CRA-registered charities, and users elsewhere act at their own volition - so it is less suited to international or individual-cause fundraising. For Canadian donors and families these are natural boundaries; for others they are limiting.
Beyond individual giving, the platform supports peer-to-peer features such as sending charitable dollars to friends and family, and Giving Groups and campaigns where several people pool or raise money for one or more charities together. A Charitable Investment Account allows account balances to be invested under advisor management. Its privacy terms note that personal data may be processed or stored outside Canada, a consideration for donors sensitive to data residency.
